I have long been a fan of Mentzer's sensible approach to weightlifting. Read this and anything else by Mentzer if your training has hit a plateau. Bottom line--if you have failed to make gains in strength and muscle mass then you are likely overtraining. Allow Mike Mentzer to dispel the myths surrounding the training programs recommended by today's drug taking strength atheletes. Allow Mike Mentzer to dispel the myths surrounding the training programs recommended by today's drug taking strength atheletes. A word of caution here, Mentzer is a devotee of Ayn Rand and allows her objectivist philosophy to find full and unchallenged expression here. Readers who just want an outline of his bodybuilding program might wish to skip the first half of the book in which Mentzer explains the science and philosophy behind his training principles. Stick with it however--for what becomes apparent is that Mentzer has trained hundreds of people. He readily admits his previous training errors and outlines for the reader how he came to create what he calls his "principled workout." Some might argue with the brevity of the training protocol advanced here. Give it a try--if it fails to produce results, I suggest tinkering with the program based on the skeleton provided in Heavy Duty. I can tell you from experience that short and intense workouts work. You will get bigger and stronger and you will be especially thankful that in less than an hour a week you can transform your body. Mentzer was an iconoclast. After reading this book you will find many of the things you thought you knew about training and diet challenged. Suffice it to say you must also question Mentzer's assumptions as he sometimes offers intense criticism of prevailing theories and takes the fact the he disproved those theories as evidence that his own untested theories are correct. Apply the same rigorous scrutiny to Heavy Duty as Mentzer does to others and you will find that Mentzer was frequently right. ...more

The late Mike Mentzer remains a bodybuilding legend, and his inspiring, brilliant writings survive thanks to the efforts of Joanne Sharkey. The Heavy Duty series is available at mikementzer.com. I've been wanting to read this series for years, but haven't been able to afford the outlandish price asked on amazon, and elsewhere, for used copies. That said, after reading Heavy Duty II: Mind and Body, I can see why people were willing to spend close to $200 for a copy of this book. The philosophy of Objectivism Mr. Mentzer describes may not appeal to everyone, but you can't argue with the logic he applies to High Intensity Training. This book was released almost twenty years ago, yet it's shocking how timely it is. Today over-training is almost a subset of bodybuilding and fitness training. Mike had the principles and integrity to ask the questions back then, that people need to start asking again. He makes thought provoking parallels between training and the study of stress physiology. There are concepts in this book that will greatly benefit anyone serious about building their body and mind. ...more
